Временной код SМРТЕ непрерывно отсчитывает 30 кадров в секунду. Поскольку NTSC-видео работает не точно на 30 кадрах в секунду, непрерывный кадровый временной код отсчитывает 108 дополнительных кадров в час; это больше, чем действительно содержит видеосигнал стандарта NTSC. Результатом является некорректная синхронизация временного кода с часами. Непрерывный кадровый временной код решает эту проблему, каждую минуту пропуская 2 кадра, за исключением каждой десятой минуты.
